                                                        LONDON

London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic and cultural centre. It’s one of the largest cities in the world. Its population is more than 9 million people. London is situated on the river Thames. It was founded more than two thousand years ago.
London is an ancient city. It appeared at the place where the Roman invaders decided to build a bridge over the Thames. There are four parts in London: West End, East End, the City and Westminster.
The City is the oldest part of London, its financial and business centre. There are many offices, companies and banks in this part of the capital. The heart of the City is the Stock Exchange. The Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral are situated in the City.
Westminster is also important part of the capital. It’s the administrative centre of London. The Houses of Parliament, the seat of the British Government, are there. Opposite the Houses of Parliament is Westminster Abbey where kings and queens have been crowned and many famous people were buried. The Houses of Parliament are often referred to as the Palace of Westminster.
The Towers of the Houses of Parliament stand high above the city. On the highest tower there is the largest clock in the country, Big Ben. Big Ben strikes every quarter of an hour.
To the west of Westminster is West End, the richest part of London. It is full of luxury hotels, super-markets, cinemas and concert-halls. In the centre of the West End the Trafalgar Square is situated with the famous statue of Lord Nelson.

To the east of Westminster is East End, an industrial district of the capital. Most of plants and factories are situated there.
The official London residence of the Queen is Buckingham Palace. The palace was built in 1703 by the Duke Buckingham. The daily ceremony of the Changing of the Guard takes place in its courtyard.
There are many museums in London. For example, the British Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum. The British Museum is the biggest museum in London. The museum is famous for its library — one of the richest in the world.
There are many beautiful parks in London. St James’s Park, Green Park, Hyde Park, and Kensington Gardens are linked together and form above 300 hectares of parkland in the heart of London.

                                                           Great Britain

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the UK) occupies most of the territory of the British Isles. It consists of four main parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. London is the capital of England, Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, Cardiff— of Wales and Belfast — of Northern Ireland. The UK is  washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the north-west, north and south-west and separated from Europe by the North Sea in the east and by the English Channel in the south. One will not find very high mountains or large plains in Great Britain. The highest mountain is Ben Nevis in Scotland, 4,406 feet high. The longest river is the Severn in England. The population of the United Kingdom is over 57 million people. Foreigners often call British people "English", but the Scots, the Irish and the Welsh do not consider themselves to be English. One of the chief industries of the country is shipbuilding. The UK is a constitutional monarchy. In law, Head of the State is Queen. In practice, the country is ruled by the elected government with the Prime Minister at the head. The British Parliament consists of two chambers: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The flag of the United Kingdom, known as the Union Jack, is made up of three crosses. The big red cross is the cross of Saint George, the patron saint of England. The white cross is the cross of Saint Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. The red diagonal cross is the cross of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.

English-Speaking Countries

There are several countries in the world where English is a native language. These countries are the United Kingdom of Great Britai and Northern Ireland, the United States of America, Australia and New Zealand. It is also one of the official languages in Canada, the Irish Republic and the Republic of South Africa. Although these countries are situated in different parts of the world, they all share the same language. As a second language English is spoken in more than 60 countries. English is one of the most popular and widespread languages in the world. I’d like to tell you a little more about the main English-speaking countries. The United Kingdom consists of four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The population of the UK is nearly sixty-three million people.  London is considered to be the capital of the country. Although everyone in the UK speaks English, the accents and dialects slightly differ. Another important English-speaking country is the USA. It is situated in the central part of the North American continent.  The official language of the country is English. However, the USA is  a multinational country and people from certain communities can speak Chinese, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, Korean and many other languages. The USA consists of 50 states and a federal district. The capital of the country is Washington D.C. Australia and New Zealand are other English-speaking countries. They are former colonies of Great Britain. The official language in these countries is English. However, people there speak with a distinctive Australian accent and use lots of new words. Canada has two official languages: French and English.

FOOD AND NON-FOOD  SHOPPING IN UKRAINE
People love to shop. There are two kinds of shopping in the Ukrainian lifestyle: food shopping and non-food shopping. Ukrainians prefer nonfood shopping to food shopping but have to do both.
Most Ukrainians shop for food twice a month. These are large shopping trips. It is common to buy a lot of products at a time: packages of sugar, rice, cans of meat or fish, bags of cookies, boxes of sweets and the like. They want to buy milk, butter, bread, fruits and vegetable  fresh.  Ukrainians visit the grocer's, the greengrocer's, the dairy, the baker's once a week.
Don't get lost at the supermarket. Take a shopping cart, look around and read the names of the departments. Then choose the products, put them into the shopping cart and go to the cash-desk. Show your buys to the cashier and pay for them.

For some Ukrainians many products are high priced that's why they do the shopping at the market place. They believe the quality of products is higher there and the prices are lower. Besides, you shouldn't stand in a line. The products are displayed on the market stands and you can choose whatever you like. It's enough to tempt you, isn't it?

Jill and Maggy are sisters. They are going shopping today. Their mother asked them to buy some food and drinks, but the girls have lost the shopping list.

  • Jill: Where is the shopping list? Have you got it?

Maggy: Me? What do you mean? Mum gave it to you. Don't you remember?

Jill: Oh, no! I've lost it!

Maggy: You're so absent-minded. Well, take it easy. Let's try to think what we need. Come on!

Jill: I'm sure we've run out of milk and butter. We've hardly any bread in the house.

Maggy: What else? Oh, look! Let's get a tin of pineapples.

Jill: Mum didn't say a word about it! But...

Maggy: Don't be so dull! Now we'll get a bottle of milk, eggs, bacon and some tea for breakfast.

Jill: Don't forget about sugar and marmalade! Now I'd like to have an ice-cream and what about you?
    Maggy: It's a good idea.

Jill: Well done! It's time to go home.

                                                            HOBBIES
  • Tastes differ. Different people like different things, different people have different hobbies. Some of them love being out in the open playing different games or just relaxing. Football, basketball or squash give a thrilling sense of speed and energy. Besides it helps keep fit.
  • Others prefer indoor activities. Clubbing, chatting with friends, surfing the net, gaming or just sleeping in and hanging out are favourite pastimes among teens. Collecting things is also an indoor hobby.
  • Many people like to do something creative, such as painting, drawing, playing music, knitting or sewing. They develop their living skills, in a word.
  • In conclusion I would like to add no matter what hobby you prefer  it becomes a part of your life. Be sure that it is a necessity but not an obsession. May success attend you!
